International Shuffleboard Association Hall of Fame Nomination. Don’s Induction Took Place the evening of 2016 10 26, at St Cloud FL.
Nominator Michael Zellner Speaks: It gives me great pleasure and honor to nominate Don Breau of Canada for induction into the ISA Hall of Fame in the Special Awards Category.
Don started shuffling in 1992 and has become a familiar face at clubs and championships all across Florida and back up in his native Canada. He is a member of 3 clubs in Florida and also his home club in Dieppe, Canada. When he is not playing he is actively volunteering his services whenever and wherever needed. In 2011, the ISA was just starting the World Singles format and there was some ongoing discussion about holding our ISA World Championship every year or bi-annually. Upon hearing this disturbing news Don insisted that bi-annually was not healthy for the newly growing ISA and Don immediately volunteered to host the 2nd ISA World Singles Championship, which was later classified as the 30th ISA World Championship in his hometown of Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada from 2 – 7 August 2011. The following is an excerpt from the official championship evaluation written by the ISA President at the conclusion of the event. “Don Breau supported, by his fabulous wife Bernie, and his hand picked team from New Brunswick Shuffleboard Club, where he was President for 15 years, put on one heck of a show for all of us. They can be proud of all their accomplishments and we, for sure, are very proud of them. Don’s support from the City of Dieppe was the most outstanding I have ever seen given to the ISA.” Don’s experience in dealing with the Dieppe Town Council for the Canadian Senior Games served him well when he became the Host of that International World Championship. The nature and extent of the involvement and real participation by the Dieppe City Council was a first for the ISA and most definitely set new standards for future ISA international Hosts. We had Mayor Jean LeBlanc and his wife at our Meet n Greet and Deputy Mayor Paul LeBlanc was there as well and then was present each day of the event and even got on the court to play some games with ISA Pros and to show how much this meant to strengthening ties, Don Breau and the ISA President presented Deputy Mayor LeBlanc with his own professional cue and case.
Immediately following this event, the ISA Board decided to continue holding its World Championship every year although now alternating between Singles and Team events.
Don has to-date participated in a total of 3 ISA World Championships and was singled out in 2012 by participating National Presidents, at the 31st ISA World Championship in Seattle, Washington to receive the prestigious Sportsmanship Merit Award for his friendship and good humor both on and off the courts towards our national and international competitors.
At the 32nd ISA World Championship, which was also the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Shuffleboard in Florida, Don volunteered his services and expertise at the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club where, each day of the championship, he meticulously inspected and prepared the numerous sets of disks being used throughout the championship.
Don exemplifies the most sought after qualities that indeed deserve induction into the ISA Hall of Fame and I am proud to nominate a competitor, a true sportsman and my friend Don Breau for induction into the prestigious ISA Hall of Fame in the year two thousand and sixteen.
Respectfully, Michael Robert Zellner, President International Shuffleboard Association.
Don Breau Had This To Say following his Induction.
I would like to thank the Committee for my nomination; it is an honour to be recognized. I began playing shuffleboard in my park for fun, joined a park team, and became Captain of the team and League President. I subsequently began playing in State Tournaments.
In New Brunswick in 1993 we organized floor shuffleboard. In 2011 the Dieppe Shuffleboard Club of NB hosted the International shuffleboard tournament. In 2013 we hosted the National Canadian Inter Provincial Tournament. I was the chairman in both. I directed most shuffleboard tournament in the Seniors Games held across NB. I am the president of Floor Shuffleboard in NB; also director on the C N S A Board.
My interest continues in the sport I love; shuffling during the winter at St Petes, as well as maintaining their discs and helping with the Courts!!
