Second year Pro Gary McGaffey and District Amateur Sharon Henderson, both of the Zephyrhills Shuffleboard Club, shocked the Florida State Shuffleboard Association World by winning the Pre-Thanksgiving Mixed Championship at Lakeland on November 23rd.  They took out some of the World’s best players; the world’s best players winter in Florida to play the Pro circuit against the very best.  In the finals they whipped Henry Strong and Glenda Brake who were trying to make it two in a row.  Brake tried to win the first game trailing 71-65 by shooting a 10 for game point but went long.  McGaffey won it with the next hammer.  The 2nd game and championship deciding game was won with a late flurry as Henderson came up with an 18 point frame turning a losing effort into the opportunity to ice the Championship which McGaffey did with a frame of 15 and 10 off putting Strong and Brake too far back to recover.  McGaffey and Henderson lost only one game and that was in a nail biting semifinal match won by one disc on McGaffey’s last hammer.

Henderson earned the option to become an instant Pro or to move up one level to State Am.  She opted to move to State Am allowing her to honor commitments to players she is scheduled to play with.  She is one more impressive Zephyrhills Amateur.
