John and Dolores Enjoy Corn!! Henry Strong Donated this Corn; 33rd ISA, Midland ON

Here is a bonus from Stan: 1-actual-for-john-brown-by-roy-norman

Last week at Briney Breezes on Florida’s East Coast in the Southeast Coast District, I offered my conjectures that shuffle play was 33% skill, 33% strategy, and 34% luck.  My opponent responded vehemently that there is no luck involved in this sport.

A couple of hours later we prevailed, winning the match, and this opponent declared that we were lucky to win!  I explained to this sudden “convert” that one reason luck is such a factor is that in a doubles match like we were playing,  eight kinds of luck exists.  I explained that each player can have both good luck on some efforts, and bad luck on others, so 8 kinds in doubles, 4 in singles.

Many players have agreed in this direction over the years but a few others have been surprised or at least bemused by this view.

Readers’ comments are welcome.  We could even print some outstanding commentary, with your blessing, of course.  This writer has previously offered to share readers’ views in a future column.

We note a couple of errors in some circulating District Tournament Schedules.  Coming Friday, Dec. 9 the schedule says yes in the lunch columns, while Thursday, Dec. 8 it says no.  Palmetto took on this extra tournament from Tri-Par with the agreement they would not have to do lunches.  So, NO lunch at Palmetto Dec 8 or9.

Also on Dec. 15 at Golf Lakes, the early schedule showed yes on lunch.  Golf Lakes will, as usual offer NO lunch Thurs. Dec. 15 or Friday, Dec. 16.  We hope these notices clarify those regrettable errors.

Happy 102nd  Birthday to Gib Stannard of Golf Lakes, our #1 Fan.

Happy Shuffling.
