The Foothills Shuffleboard Association’s (FSA) bid to host the International Shuffleboard Association (ISA) team tournament has been accepted and the High River-based group is preparing for the event to be held in 2018.
As previously reported in the High River Times, the group submitted their application for the 36th International Shuffleboard Association Team Tournament earlier this year. The club has received support from MLA Wayne Anderson, MP John Barlow and the MD of Foothills. The Town of High River has also granted the use of the small ice arena at the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex for free during the event, which will be held July 15, 2018.
“We are so excited about it,” Ken Wardley, vice-president for the FSA, said. “Everyone we have talked to are just thrilled to death. We have had several comments from people overseas who are really excited about coming into High River.”
Wardley explained he’s spoken with several international shuffleboard players and there is tons of anticipation for the future tournament.
“They are talking about going to the Calgary Stampede, coming down to High River for the tournament and then they want to spend ten days or two weeks just visiting southern Alberta,” he said.
Planning for the event is now underway and the club is now developing a FSA logo.
“As soon as we get the logo done we will be showing it out to everyone,” he said. “We have asked one or two people in High River if they could help us develop one.”
Wardley added the club will make it a priority to use as many local and regional businesses while organizing the tournament.
Wardley said the decision to come to High River was unanimous for the ISA and the president of the Canadian National Shuffleboard Association (CNSA) Myrna Bilton will be in attendance.
“This will be the first team tournament for the new Canadian National Shuffleboard president,” he said.
The international tournament is expected to have players from 16 countries, Wardley noted. He added there will be two teams representing Canada. A playdown to determine the Canada-west team will occur in August 2017.
Wardley added he hopes several FSA members will make the team.
The event will be held at the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex on July 15, 2018.
