ZEPHYRHILLS SHUFFLERS WIN USA ATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS at Lakeland, FL

Zephyrhills Shuffleboard Players turned out in force for the Summer National Championships concluded on Tuesday, May 2nd, on the Lakeland, FL courts.

Zephyrhills fielded a powerful group of teams coming away with both the Men’s and Women’s Championships and won three of the four Championship bracket positions in the Men’s field as well as the top two positions in the Women’s field.

John Houghtaling, Zephyrhills Shuffle Club, won his 1st National Championship and was awarded the coveted, once in a lifetime, National Pin.  His Partner, Earl Ball, notched his record extending 20th National Championship and although they had some close games they won all of their matches in two straight games.

In the Women’s field Pauline Murphy, ZSC, who turns Pro in October was awarded the National Pin for her victory while teaming with 1000 Point, Green Jacket Master, Joan Cook of Betmar who won her 11th National Championship.  The quarters and the semis went to a third game but neither was close.   Murphy and Cook beat Joanne Allen and Katy Walker of the Zephyrhills Club in the Finals.  Murphy, when asked after the Tournament if anything spectacular happened said “Joan”.  I guess you would expect a “Green Jacket Master” to be spectacular.
