Bob Robinson Speaks: The Hawthorne Shuffleboard Club was honored to host the FSA Masters from April 2nd to April 5th, 2018. The group was welcomed to Hawthorne by Chairman Bill Jones, State President Dave Kudro, and Glenn Monroe. A wonderful display of shuffleboard talent was provided by both the Ladies and Men who participated. The fans who came to watch and all of shufflers who helped on the courts and watched from the back rows were able see why we weren’t playing in this year’s Masters. Twelve of Hawthorne’s 24 courts were used during the competition. As always, some of the courts selected seemed to more challenging for players then others. The players who lost matches on those courts were allowed to blame the drift or ridge on the court and everyone would smile.
Glenn Monroe was the tournament director for the Masters and ran a great tournament. He even broke out a new toy to determine the disc closest to the center of the lag line on one particularly close lag. Both of the divisions played most of the matches as non-walking singles with two pushers to return discs and make first and second calls. The weather cooperated on all four days which allowed everything to run smoothly and on time.
Forty nine different volunteers were involved in making the tournament a success for the players. A big thank you was extended to all of them at the Awards luncheon by President Dave Kudro. The club hopes it will have the opportunity to undertake this challenge again in seven years. Betmar will be the host of the Masters in 2019 and will surely put on a great show.
