More on the Trent Severn Waterway. This Time, A Lift-Lock; The Peterborough Lift-Lock!

Peterborough-Lift-Lock

August 1993, Peterborough, Canada
A common misconception is that the Peterborough Lift Locks are the biggest lift locks in the world. With a vertical lift of almost 20m, these locks were the largest when built. But there are now much larger lift locks. One of them can be found at Scharnebeck, east of Lüneburg, in Germany.
However, the Peterborough lift locks still hold the distinction of being the largest hydraulic lift locks. That is, the two locks counter-balance each other with hydraulic pressure.

As most readers know, Stan and Lois visited China in 2012. We sailed down the Yangtze River, and visited among other things, the largest power generating station in the world, AND the largest lift-lock in the world!! I invite you to click on the link to read information relative to one day of our China Adventure:  https://celebrate100yearsofshuffleboard.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/day-9-our-cruise-on-the-yangtze-river-begins.pdf
