Ruthie Brown; Pam Nurnberger; Glenna Earle and Linda Marshman. 4 Top Shufflers. Stan
Sebring State Tournament Jan 2/3, 2019, 2nd day.
Linda Marshman and I were lucky enough to find ourselves ready to play the finals against Ruth Brown and Pam Nurnberger, 2 top HOFers!!!! Remember Linda just arrived and this is her first Tournament of the season and my 2nd, although we are also HOFers!!!
It was the most exciting match I have had the pleasure of playing for a long time.
The first game was won by Ruth & Pam with a close margin. The 2nd game was to be Linda’s and mine.
Now it is time for the “rubber” and it is about 3:00 P.M. Very warm humid day and we are on Court 18, a mighty tricky little devil!! Ruthie told me it was straight but I think she and I both agreed in the end that it was anything but ….perhaps straighter than some others, but it was the one we were assigned.
By the time we had reached the mid way point in the 3rd game people are standing around watching as it is a “to-ing and fro-ing” back and forth as one team pulled away and then the other. Back and forth and finally at the end of 2 hammers for Ruth & Pam their score is 62 and ours is 67. A simple “bang everything off and collect your hammer”, correct?
Well it was anything but! The play was at the head and Pam placed a beautiful hide which Linda attempted to remove only to “stick”! Pam, being the champ she is, sent one down suicide alley, perfectly placed. Linda tried to send the hide into the good disc without success. Pam slid another in the same sweet spot! A few other things happened and then coming down to Linda’s hammer, there is now a black disc on the 7/8 line just in front of 2 beauts, well hidden, with an additional guard in front of them as well. At this point Pam has 14 points sitting on the board to add to her 62. Are you checking the score? That gives her 76. So now poor Linda has 2 choices since shooting an 8 will not do it. Remember we are 67!!
She either blasts into the pile of black discs and tries to remove at least one and hopefully score an 8, an unprecedented miracle! OR try to slide in a perfect 10. She chose the latter and wouldn’t you know she would have made it except for about 1/4inch of a line snagging the darn thing!!!
The crowd erupted with applause 👏 for all of us (I think).
We were thrilled to play such an exciting match even if we didn’t quite get 1st place, especially against 2 of the most amazing shuffling ladies on the circuit.
What a wonderful game we have the opportunity to enjoy and the people are what make it the BEST. We laughed a lot but had a serious match. In the end we all hugged and shook hands and congratulated one another and had our picture taken.
Are we lucky to have found this delightful sport or what???
