Florida State Tournament Results: P12A, P12B, P12C, A09

This week the split tournaments took us up and down the state. For the second time this season the Florida State Shuffleboard Association tried a three way split on the pro schedule, meaning there were three tournaments held instead of the normal two. I have mixed feelings about the tri-split experiment. The hope is to get more total people playing each week, but in doing so the tournament fields become diluted.

Last season the P12 tournaments were split between Clearwater and Lee County. This season in those events Lee County was down four women’s teams and seven men’s teams while Clearwater was down five women and five men’s teams. I don’t know how much of that is due to the tri-split or just the continuation of the dwindling field sizes all over the state. I think the bigger issue is holding tournaments in the West Coast and Southern District’s on the same day. They’re too close and end up dividing the pool of players, especially those from Bradenton, which is in the middle of both districts. If it was a double split between St. Cloud and either Clearwater or Lee County I think the fields would be bigger.

We start with P12A in Lee County. First off, a big congratulations to Allie Enos for earning her 200th pro point, qualifying her for the FSA Hall of Fame!

In P12B at Clearwater, I wanted to spotlight Mike Mitchell and Job Halfyard for finishing third in the main bracket. Mike and Job are new pros and earned their first pro points in this tournament, beating Earl Ball and Henry Strong in the second round and Rosaire Cote and Niziolek in the quarterfinals. That’s not easy to do at any point, especially your first state tournament. Congrats to them.
