We Tell You Just A Little About Roy Norman

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Roy Norman, was born in 1927 and retired in 1982. His work in education as a School Coach exposed him to a wide variety of sports.  Like so many he thought golf would be his prime activity in retirement.  However; it soon became evident that Shuffleboard offered “The Appeal” for the Normans! They began shuffling in Naples, FL and later relocated to Lakeland, FL.

In the winter of 1991 the Normans were invited to play on the Canadian ISA team for a tournament that took place in Clearwater FL in 1992; since then Doreen and Roy have participated in 16 ISA Team Tournaments and also the Singles Tournaments at Betmar in 2009, Dieppe NB in 2011 and most recently at the 33rd ISA in St Petersburg, FL.  Roy served as National President of Canada from 1996 to 2000, bringing badly needed harmony and stability to the Canadian Organization, an accomplishment that earned Roy a great deal of respect both nationally and internationally. During his tenure he convinced the ISA that Canada would be a worthy host which resulted in a most memorable, a most successful ISA event in Goderich, ON. For all of the above, Roy was inducted into the ISA Hall of Fame in 2001.  This accolade did not diminish in any way, Roy’s intense desire to see Shuffleboard grow, within North America and beyond. On more than one occasion Roy has submitted comprehensive proposals to Board Members of the ISA, proposals designed to increase the appeal to Players, but more significantly, proposals designed to increase the appeal of the local media, and thus, in the long run, increase PARTICIPATION!

Roy’s persistent pursuit of the game had nothing to do with a desire to win! His persistent pursuit had everything to do with ensuring the game was enjoyed by those participating, coupled with the goal of widening the appeal so that other Nations would find the reward that he and Doreen had experienced so many years before.  In this regard the Normans joined the Inaugurals, most recently participating in the Norwegian Inaugural but prior to that, they participated in the Inaugurals to both Brazil and Russia.

Ladies and Gentleman; reflect for a moment; Roy began shuffling and supporting the ISA in 1992, AND continues to this day, 22 years later!! We have an individual who is indeed worthy of the Lifetime Achievement Award. I give you Roy Norman.

ROY AND DOREEN NORMAN; Shufflers And World Peace Activists.

Roy and Doreen Norman live in Ayer’s Cliff, Quebec during the summer and Sterling Park in Lakeland, FL during the winter. They are active shufflers year round, whether it is in their complex in Ayer’s Cliff where they have Shuffleboard Courts OR in some distant Club in support of the Game.

Roy is a Past President of the CNSA, Doreen a Past Secretary.  Roy and Doreen have participated in 14 International Shuffleboard Events.

Roy is a member of the ISA (International Shuffleboard Assn.) as well as the CNSA (Canadian National Shuffleboard Assn.) Hall of Fame.

Up until this year, both Roy and Doreen participated in State Tournaments on a weekly basis; both are Florida Pros.

In the 1st World Singles at Betmar in 2009, Roy finished 7th in a field of 32.  Doreen finished 13th in a field of 32.

Roy is the author of the BLACKSTOCK PRAYER!!

BELOW I have summarized Roy and Doreen’s early actions in the pursuit of World Peace, those up to 2008. Since 2008-2009 Roy has intensified his efforts.  He has submitted comprehensive and specific proposals for the reformation of the United Nations.  His determination has no end. In the spring of 2010 Roy received a personal acknowledgment from USA President Barack Obama. His proposals are now in Book Form.

Shuffleboard and the Normans are inseparable in Canada.

My first memory of Roy and Doreen Norman is at the AGM of the CNSA held at Goderich, ON coincident with the “changing of the guard” ~~ Roy & Doreen leave office and Al Weeks assumes the leadership role effective January of 2000.

I remember going to the front of the meeting when it ended and introducing myself to Roy & Doreen; ~~ expressing regret that they were leaving office and thanking them for their contribution.  At that time I had no idea on how well or poorly for that matter, the NORMANS had performed while in office.

Little did I know that our paths would grow increasingly together, beginning with the Clearwater ISA of 2002.  It was in Clearwater that Roy and Doreen’s performance as Canadian Team Captains caught my attention; it was in Clearwater during the banquet that Roy’s performance as the one chosen to offer the Invocation again caught my attention!!  That Clearwater Invocation carried the seeds of what was to become the BLACKSTOCK PRAYER.

In 2005, at the time Lois and I were “putting together” the original Spring Fling, we recalled Roy’s Invocation at Clearwater.  We invited Roy to offer the Invocation for the 1st Annual Ritesco Cup, the Scugog Spring Fling of Blackstock!!  The REST IS HISTORY!

The birth of the BLACKSTOCK PRAYER* was in this very Blackstock Auditorium, just one year ago, (May of 2005). Almost all of you were midwives!!   In the audience was the Mayor of Scugog, Her Worship Mayor Marilyn Pearce.  Mayor Pearce spoke following Roy’s presentation of the Invocation and commented favourably on it!!  The two met following the Official Opening and plans were made to carry the Blackstock Prayer to St John’s Newfoundland which was host to a National Meeting of the Federation of Municipalities.

To grow the Prayer, to “give it legs”, Stan approached Michael Zellner, President of the Brazilian Shuffleboard Assn. with a view to presenting the prayer at the final Banquet of the International Shuffleboard Meet to be held in Brazil in September of 2005.  The Blackstock Prayer was translated into French, into Portuguese, and Japanese, and read line by line in the native tongue of the presenter.  To say that the Invocation was greeted with enthusiasm is a gross understatement. Among its strongest supporters were the Americans, some requesting copies to take to their Club, and yes, to their Church.  If Clearwater was the conception; Blackstock the birth; the baby’s first steps were surely at St John’s, Nfld., and Brazil was the onset of puberty.

Maturity and the onset of adulthood were not unlike our own lives; Roy expanded his horizons; world peace achievable by reform of the United Nations became his goal!! Roy made an eloquent and persuasive proposal to some of the most influential people in the world. His proposal to them, although well received, never came to fruition. As an example of his energy, of his zeal, let me share with you that he had replies from Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General; the Mayor of Hiroshima, Japan who is a world leader in ridding the world of Atomic and Nuclear Weapons, and many others. We must not forget however; that the world is seldom changed by the single action of any single individual or body; what is needed, what has an impact, is the action of many smaller bodies. Listen to what the Scugog Council, led by Mayor Pearce, contributed!!The Municipal Council of Scugog Township recited the prayer at a Council Meeting in support of the International Day of Peace, and the United Nations was so advised.  All Shufflers can take satisfaction in the recognition accorded the Prayer.  I believe it appropriate to insert Kofi Annan’s explanation of the International Day of Peace: The International Day of Peace “is meant to be a day of global cease-fire, when all countries and all people stop all hostilities for the entire day. And it is a day on which people around the world observe a minute of silence at 12 noon local time. […]And let us pledge to do our utmost to carry out the important decisions on peace taken by last week’s 2005 World Summit.” The International Day of Peace “is meant to be a day of global cease-fire, when all countries and all people stop all hostilities for the entire day. And it is a day on which people around the world observe a minute of silence at 12 noon local time. […]And let us pledge to do our utmost to carry out the important decisions on peace taken by last week’s 2005 World Summit.” If ever the Blackstock prayer was uppermost in Roy’s mind, questionable at best; he has moved to a quest of far greater significance ~~ that being the banning of all nuclear weapons, and the creation of a system of world affairs that would change from a world functioning by POWER and WAR MENTALITY, to a world functioning by INTELLIGENCE, FAIRNESS AND CONSIDERATION!! And lest anyone think that Roy and Doreen just sit at home and dream such utopia, they do not.
